This is a great game version to start with if you are new to the Hero's Journey concept or are playing with younger players. Helpful for practice with:
2 - 4 Players
Place all Hero’s Journey buttons the corresponding sections - just make sure not to cover up the circles – this is where the players’ game pieces will go as they travel around the board.
Option: Place all the Hero's Journey buttons in the middle of the board in a “pool” so that when it's time to collect a piece, you get to "hunt" for it!
Option: Instead of Hero's Journey buttons, use small snacks or treasures!
Place all player game pieces in Ordinary World section. Each player gets to start with an Ordinary World button!
Youngest player rolls first.
1) Player rolls die; and then
2) Moves their game piece (clockwise) around the Hero’s Journey board according to what they roll.
3) Collect your button (if you land on a section that you don’t already have), place it on your Hero Gamecard and your turn is over. If you land on a section with a button you already have, do not collect any buttons and your turn is over!
The next person then takes their turn and play continues until one person has collected all 9 of their Hero’s Journey buttons. The winner gets to take the final Hero button to complete their Hero Gamecard.
Collect all 9 Hero's Journey buttons.
Once the basic game play is mastered, feel free to layer in additional rules to make things even more interesting and fun. Here are some example additional rules you might consider adding:
If you roll a 3, you can SWITCH your game piece with someone else's on the board. If you end up switching them to a section that they still need, they get to collect a new button too!
If you roll a 5, you must SWITCH directions of game play.
Each player gets a Helper Card at the beginning of the game. Play the Helper card to give someone an extra roll. Here's the catch - you must play your Helper Card before you can win the game!
Each player gets a Mentor Card at the beginning of the game. Before another player rolls, play the Mentor card to move someone to a part of the Hero’s Journey they still need. Here's the catch - you must play your Mentor Card before you can win the game.
Each player gets a Roadblock Card at the beginning of the game. Play the Roadblock to prevent another player from rolling and end their turn.
We've included blank Secret Hero Cards if you'd like to add your own twist!
Decide on new Challenges to complete in order to "earn" your button using a blank Challenge Board.
